The Blast in the Badlands was the third gymnastics meet of the season for the Eastern Montana Gymnastics team of Circle. Nineteen girls traveled to Watford City, N.D., Feb. 11-12 for the annual meet. The gold team won the second- place award, out of nine teams, and was only .625 behind the first-place team. The silver team won the fourthplace award, out of 10 teams.

Three EMG gymnasts earned first place all-around awards. They were silver gymnast Ali Gibbs of Circle and gold gymnasts Kendra Linder of Glendive and Ava Hove of Circle. Silver gymnasts Nomi Deserly, DaRae Deserly and Ashlynn Johannessen, all of Wolf Point, earned second place allaround awards. The EMG team also won 12 first-place event finishes. Winning first places in their age groups were Gibbs, Nomi Deserly, DaRae Deserly and Johannesen on vault; Johnannesen and Linder on uneven bars, Gibbs and N. Deserly on balance beam; and D. Deserly, Johannessen, Gibbs and Kynlee Houck of Glendive on floor exercise.

Teams attending the meet were from Minot, Grand Forks, Bismarck, Carrington, Jamestown, Ray, Beulah, Watford City and Williston, N.D.; Rapid City and Sturgis, S.D.; Gilette, Wyo.; Billings, Glendive, Sidney and Circle.

Seven girls competed for EMG’s silver team and had the highest floor score of the 10 teams. Gibbs, N. Deserly and D. Deserly led their team with allaround scores of over 36 points. Besides Gibbs’ first places on all-around, vault, beam and floor, she was second on uneven bars, out of the five gymnasts in the senior age group.

D. Deserly and Azzy Toavs of Wolf Point competed in the Junior D age group, with nine gymnasts. Besides her first on vault, D. Deserly tied for first on floor and second place all-around score, she was fifth on beam. Toavs was third on floor and fifth on vault and bars.

N. Deserly and Kynlee Houck competed in the Junior B age group, out of eight gymnasts. N. Deserly was fourth on bars and floor, besides her first place on beam, tie for first on vault and second place allaround score. Houck added a third place on beam and a fourth-place all-around score, besides her first on floor. Johannessen competed in the Junior A age group of seven gymnasts and had her firsts on vault and bars, a tie for first on floor and second place for allaround. Emma Hove, of Circle, competed in the Child A age group of nine gymnasts and was third for her all-around score and fourth on bars.

Ava Hove and Lina Smith of Richey led EMG’s gold team of seven girls with scores of over 36 points. Smith competed in the Senior A age group with 10 gymnasts and had second places on vault, beam and floor, a third place for her allaround score and a fifth place on bars. Hove added second place finishes on vault, bars, and floor and a fourth place on beam in addition to her first-place all-around score, out of the 10 gymnasts in the Child A age group.

Ella Beery and Justine Massar, both of Circle, also competed in that age group and Beery was third on bars while Massar was fifth on bars. Linder and Aspen Boje of Glendive competed in the Junior B age group, out of nine gymnasts. Besides Linder’s first place on all-around and tie for first on bars, she was tied for second on beam and floor and was third on vault. Boje was fourth on floor and fifth on bars and all-around. Lily Beery of Circle competed in her first meet of the season in the Junior A age group, out of 10 gymnasts. She earned a tie for second place on beam and a tie for third on bars.

Five EMG girls competed in the bronze level and finished in fifth place, out of the nine teams. Jud Rehbein of Richey competed in the Child A age group and was second on bars and beam, third for her allaround, tied for third on floor and fifth on vault. Gentry Rosaaen of Circle, Mya Verschoot of Richey and Brooklynn Boren of Glendive competed in the Child B age group of 10 gymnasts. Rosaaen was second on bars, tied for third on beam, fourth on floor and tied for fifth for her allaround. Verschoot was second on floor and Boren was fifth on floor. Juliette Freeman of Circle was second on floor, out of the eight gymnasts in the Child D age group.

The EMG team’s next meets will be in Billings and Minot, N.D.
