Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t recover from a cold spell in the third quarter and fell to Scobey, 40-39, at home on Saturday, Feb. 12.

A drive by Kelby Bauer and a three-pointer by Corey Martell put the Wolves ahead 24-23 midway into the third quarter, but Scobey struck for nine of the last 11 points of the quarter for a 32-26 advantage. Wolf Point’s only points during the stretch came on two free throws by Juliun Benson with 27 seconds left in the quarter.

Wolf Point battled back to 32-30 on a layup by Martell after a steal by Bauer and a pair of free throws by Gaige Bushman in the fourth period. The Spartans scored the next five points, but a drive off a rebound by Jaxon Azure kept the Wolves alive at 37-32 with 2:28 left.

A three-pointer by Azure and two free throws by Martell pulled the Wolves to 39-37 with 1:28 remaining. The Wolves came away empty on their next two possessions, and Scobey added a free throw by Bo Anderson with 19 seconds left.

Martell scored off a rebound to cut the gap to 49-39 with six seconds left, but the Wolves didn’t gain possession again.

Wolf Point’s top scorers were Bauer with 10, Martell with nine and Azure with eight.

Also scoring were Bushman with five, Benson with two, Kraven Silk with two, Shastin Damon with two and Ethan Blount with one.

Leading the Spartans were Jace Bilbrey with 11, Hudson Kjos with eight and Gage Hallock with eight.

A drive by Silk put the Wolves up 16-14 with 2:23 left in the first half, but the Spartans answered with two free throws by Hallock and a three-pointer by Anderson.

A free throw by Bauer and a basket off a rebound by Damon produced a 19-19 deadlock at the half.

The Wolves will face Harlem in the first round of the District 2B tournament in Glasgow starting at 8 p.m. The top four teams will advance to the divisional tournament.
