Bearcubs Drop Contest To Mavericks


The Frazer Bearcubs fell behind early and lost to North Country, 61-40, in the first round of the District 3C boys’ basketball tournament in Wolf Point Wednesday, Feb. 16.
Frazer gained a 5-4 lead on a basket by Joseph Belton with 5:52 left in the first quarter, but North Country accounted for the next seven points including a three-pointer by 6-5 senior Trey Johnson.
The Mavericks then tallied nine of the final 11 points of the opening period for a 20-9 advantage.
The Bearcubs struck for the first seven points of the second period on a basket by Ryker Ackerman, an inside hoop by Beston and a three-pointer by R. Ackerman to pull to 20-16.
North Country held a 26-21 half-time lead.
The Mavericks increased the margin to 36-23 to open the third quarter until the Bearcubs responded with baskets by Beston and Keein Ackerman.
North Country led 42-27 at the end of the third quarter and gained a 51-33 advantage midway into the fourth period.
K. Ackerman led the Bearcubs with 13 points.
Top scorers for North Country were Aiden Albus with 23, Johnson with 18 and Blaine Downing with 14 points.
