The Froid/Lake Red Hawks clinched a berth to the Eastern C divisional girls’ basketball tournament by beating Circle, 47-40, in Sidney on Saturday, Feb. 19.

The contest was deadlocked at 40-40 until three free throws by Dasani Nesbit put Froid/Lake ahead 43-40 with 2:05 remaining.

After a steal by Brooklynn Nordwick, Baylee Davidson hit a pair of free throws for a 45-40 lead with 1:37 left.

Two free throws in the last minute by Carolyne Christoffersen and Nesbit put the final at 47-40.

Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Christoffersen with 18 and Nesbit with 14 points. Also scoring were Davidson with six, Mara Salvevold with four, Meg Ator with three and Nordwick with two.

Nesbit grabbed 14 rebounds for the Red Hawks.

Leading Circle were Kayli Haynie and Sierra Nagle with 12 points each. Alexis Moline added eight points.

Froid/Lake made 18 of its 30 free-throw attempts compared to Circle’s eight of 14 tries.

The scoring of Nagle led Circle to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter.

The Red Hawks gained the upper-hand with the opening six points of the second period on two free throws by Salvevold, a drive by Nesbit and an inside shot by Christoffersen for a 12-9 lead.

A three-pointer by Ator increased Froid/Lake’s lead to 15-11, but the Wildcats struck for the next seven points including three-pointers by Haynie and Nagle.

A layup by Salvevold put the Red Hawks up by a 19-18 half-time margin.

The scoring of Nesbit and Christoffersen increased the Red Hawks’ lead to 24-19 midway into the third quarter, but Circle battled back for a 26-26 deadlock at the end of the third quarter.
