Red Hawks Knock Off Savage, 50-41


The Froid/Lake Red Hawks overcame a poor start and downed Savage, 50-41, during first-round action of the District 2C girls’ basketball tournament in Sidney on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
The Red Hawks fell behind 9-1 and trailed by a 14-3 margin at the end of the first quarter.
Savage’s Karley McPherson scored to put the Warriors up 18-7 with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter. The Red Hawks then worked their way back into the contest as two free throws by Carolynn Christoffersen, a free throw by Dasani Nesit, a 14-footer by Mara Salvevold and a three-pointer by Christoffersen closed the gap to 18-15.
After a layup by Savage’s Brooke Reuter, Froid/Lake cut the gap to 20-18 on a free throw by Nesbit and an inside hoop by Christoffersen to end the half.
A three-pointer by Baylee Davidson gave the Red Hawks their first lead of the contest at 27-25 with 3:35 left in the third quarter. The scoring of Nesbit and Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up by a 35-26 margin.
Davidson then connected on another three-pointer for a 38-26 to end the third quarter.
Steals and layups by Cambry Conradsen got Savage back to 42-37 midway into the fourth quarter. The Red Hawks stayed ahead on free throws by Brooklyn Nordwick, but Savage struck back with a free throw by Taylor Conradsen and a basket off a rebound by Verhasselt.
The Red Hawks responded with three points by Christoffersen and a free toss by Nesbit for a 48-40 lead with only 1:45 remaining.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Christoffersen with 14, Davidson with 13 and Nesbit with 11. Also scoring were Nordwick with six, Meg Ator with four and Salvevold with two.
Leaders in rebounds were Christoffersen with nine and Nesbit with eight. Nesbit had five assists and Christoffersen finished with seven steals.
Reuter led Savage with 17 points. Teah Conradsen and Taylor Conradsen added seven points each.
The Red Hawks fell to district champion Plentywood, 57-15, in the semi-final round on Friday, Feb. 18.
The Red Hawks trailed 27-1 after the first quarter.
Top scorers for Froid/Lake were Nesbit with six and Salvevold with four points.
