Red Hawks Defeat Wildcats


The Froid/Lake Red Hawks overcame slow-down tactics by Plentywood to earn a 48-30 first-round victory at the Eastern C boys’ basketball divisional tournament in Sidney on Wednesday, March 2.
The Red Hawks, using a trapping defense, gained a quick 8-0 lead on two baskets by Tyler Wivholm, a steal and drive by Javonne Nesbit and a basket by Brett Stentoft off a pass from Nesbit.
Froid/Lake was able to increase its lead to 14-2 on another hoop by Wivholm, a steal and layup by Stentoft and a 12-footer by Connor Huft. The Red Hawks led 18-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
A three-pointer by Reese Wirtz highlighted Plentywood’s play in the second period, but a hoop by Mason Dethman and a layup by Huft put the half-time margin at 24-13.
The Red Hawks then broke away with 11 straight points in the third quarter including five points by Bode Miller and four points by Nesbit.
The Wildcats, however, closed the gap to 35-21 with the last six points of the quarter on a three-pointer by Wirtz and three free tosses by Caydon Trupe.
Two more baskets by Wirtz got the Wildcats as close as 36-25, but Froid/Lake took control with 12 of the game’s next 14 points. Dethman scored four of the points.
Dethman led the Red Hawks with 11 points. Adding eight points each were Wivholm and Nesbit.
Also scoring were Stentoft with seven, Miller with five, Patton Bighorn with five and Huft with four.
Dethman finished with six assists and Nesbit had four steals.
Top scorers for Plentywood were Wirtz with 12 and Noah Murray with six.
