Poplar Attracts Young Golfers

Poplar’s golf program has a new coach and several new players this season.
Brock Copenhaver is guiding the Indians’ golf program this year. His experience includes being a graduate of a golf academy in Chandler, Ariz.
“I’m an avid golfer myself and enjoy the game,” Copenhaver said. “I’m trying to get more youth to pick up the game of golf.”
Poplar’s turnout for golf consists of four boys and three girls.
The boys’ team features Landon Young, Quinn Southerland, Preston Ogle and Michael Young. Poplar’s girls’ golf squad includes Kya Buckles, Gracie Tolman and Gracelyn Medicine Cloud.
Ogle and Medicine Cloud are returning letterwinners for the Indians.
“We’ve been teaching the basics of putting and chipping,” Copenhaver said. “We still have to learn golf etiquette and the rules.”
The Indians will open their season in Wolf Point April 21.
“Hopefully by the end of the year, they are each shaving nine or 10 strokes off their scores,” Copenhaver said.
He hopes that a few of the golfers can qualify for the state tournament scheduled in Fairmont Hot Springs on May 17-18. The divisional meet is May 10 in Malta.
