Trustees Listen To New Coaching Process Plan
Wolf Point superintendent of schools Loverty Erickson provided a new athletic extra-curricular hiring process for trustees to review during the monthly school board meeting on Monday, March 14.
Erickson said she was requesting feedback for the process of hiring extra-curricular leaders.
The new process includes: if current staff members apply for a position, they should submit a letter of interest and a resume. If a non-staff member applies, they should complete a classified application, cover letter, two letters of recommendation, copies of licenses or certifications, college or high school transcripts.
If the activities director wishes to interview the applicant, the AD should put together a three- to five-person committee for the interview.
When the successful applicant is offered a contract, it is a one-year contract with no obligation to rehire in the next season. If the employee has a successful employee evaluation, the AD — in collaboration with the superintendent — will make a final decision to put the employee on a board agenda for rehire for the following season.
If there is a non-favorable evaluation or if the AD — in collaboration with the superintendent — decides to open the position, the said coach will be notified and also told they are allowed to reapply at their discretion. The position will be reopened and advertised.
Erickson added that she and activities director Eric Peterson are working on a new pay scale with steps for coaches.
At the start of the school board meeting, a parent expressed concerns of bullying at all Wolf Point schools.
“It’s gotten so bad, I might have to pull my students out,” the father said, “and that breaks my heart.”
The parent asked, “What’s going on and what’s being done?”
Board chair Linda L. Hansen said, “We will certainly take it under consideration.’ Later in the meeting, Erickson said school officials continue working on a behavior matrix. She said she was thankful that the parent expressed his concerns.
“He’s frustrated with the system. We are raising standards to combat bullying,” Erickson said.
Trustee Lanette Clark asked if resource officer Corey Reum could be at an elementary school for a day to try to decrease bullying problems.
Trustee Ronald Jackson said maybe more resource officers need to be hired.
“To me, it sounds like we need to do it,” Jackson said.
Northside Elementary School principal Georgie Gourneau said she has suggested hiring a dean of students at the school.
Individuals hired included Shaylea Mitchell as Southside secretary, Sharon Acson as Northside elementary teacher, Carl John Pasoy as Southside elementary teacher, Shawn Erickson as Northside special education teacher and Charissa Zaballero as Southside elementary teacher. Myrle Zilksoski resigned as junior high counselor at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
Trustees approved an agreement with McKinstry Essention to spent $48,800 in order to create a master plan for ESSER funds.
Trustees also approved the facilities committee’s recommendation to have Azure Interiors redesign the high school/junior high school lobby, restoration of the wolf and proposed painted prairie scene to take the place of the current setting of Wolfie to hold a buffalo hide and skull.
The board approved $6,240 to purchase shot clocks, receivers and light kits.
