Froid’s 10th and 11th grade art students have creatively expressed their school spirit by teaming up to give the gym’s old, and outdated, school mascot emblems a fresh, new look.

The school district’s outdated team mascot signs were originally painted more than 30 years ago. Some of the mascot images are no longer current and other schools in the district had combined their athletic programs and changed their mascot logos.

The signs were long overdue for a transformation!

“This has been a multi-step renovation project,” said Maria Gallegos, Froid’s art teacher. “The students have carefully sanded down and painted over the old emblem images. They used the internet to verify updated mascot images by viewing other schools’ home websites.”

The images were then projected and carefully traced onto the newly painted-over circular panels.

The new signs have retained the wide black bands of the old emblems, but will now include the schools’ names on the top portion and the mascots’ name on the bottom, in easy-to-read, white lettering.

“I am very proud of the work these students are doing,” Gallegos said.

The teacher added, “They have really worked together; putting a lot of time and careful effort into this project. They’re doing beautiful work. These emblems will be on public display for many years to come.”

The backs of the completed sign panels bear the signatures of the students who worked on them.

The colorful new signs will be rehung in the school’s gymnasium when they have all been completed. Work continues on the signs, giving the mascot logos an updated look and much needed makeovers.
