Penny Ronning, a candidate for Montana Congressional District 2, visited Culbertson School Friday, May 6. She made an in class visit and discussed her rational for entering politics and running for the Eastern Montana seat.

Ronning is a former member of the Billings City Council.

“Montana, like the rest of the country, is filled with real people with real needs and real desire for our state and our country to matter to elected officials,” said Ronning via social media. “Outside of the political extremists, which are lessening in number, are real people wanting to better their lives and their communities. They are wanting to talk and work with one another. [...] I am seeing young students really wanting adults to talk and work with one another.”

“We met her in Helena and she was chatty with kids and said she’d stop in to visit with us,” said Machart.

Ronning also picked out Culbertson after noticing artwork left in the Helena from Culbertson JMG Kindness Rocks members.

Said Ronning, “First painted rock I’ve ever found! Great Northern Hotel Helena, MT, 4.27.2022. Painted by students from Culbertson High School attending the Jobs for Montana’s Graduates Jamboree!”

Machart said that Ronning answered students’ questions and encouraged them to pursue their passions.

“She came into the classroom and met with the kids as if she had been a guest teacher here often,” said Machart. “Upon sharing her story, the students became quite engaged. They were expecting someone who is running for office to give a polished story of themselves. Ronning was just the opposite, very real and easy to relate to.”
