Parents Should Check Children’s Halloween Candy
When area youngsters hit the streets for treats on Halloween Monday, Oct. 31, safety should always be a key throughout the night.
The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office notes that parents should always check their children’s candy before the youngsters eat the treasures they receive. The country’s Drug Enforcement Administration has advised the public of an alarming emerging trend of colorful fentanyl available across the United States.
DEA reports that brightly colored fentanyl and fentanyl pills have been seized in 26 states since August. The DEA feels this trend appears to be a new method used by drug cartels to sell the highly addictive drug made to look like candy to children and young people.
The DEA said every color, shape and size of this brightly colored fentanyl should be considered extremely dangerous. Fentanyl is already 50 times more potent than heroin with a dose of just two milligrams considered a lethal dose, the release said.
More than 75,000 Americans died from overdose of synthetic opioids, mainly fentanyl, in the 12-month period ending in February 2022. Drug overdose is now the number one killer of adults aged 18-45.
