Poplar Girls Pick Up Victories
Poplar’s girls’ basketball squad posted two victories during the Native American Classic held in Browning.
After beating Box Elder, 60-40, on Friday, the Indians knocked off Rocky Boy by a 74-37 final on Saturday.
Against Rocky Boy, Poplar gained an early 14-2 advantage on the scoring of Rikki Belton, Cammie Martell and Kessee Erickson.
A drive by Brealyn Nordwick and a steal and layup by Saydee Archambault put the Indians up by an 18-3 margin. Poplar held an 18-6 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
Consecutive three-pointers by EmmaRae Martell and Nordwick were good for a 24-6 lead. A baseline shot by Nordwick and a free throw by Belton produced a 27-6 advantage.
With the score at 28-16, the Indians struck for six straight points on a turnaround shot by Erickson, a three-pointer by C. Martell and a free throw by Belton. A three-pointer by E. Martell ended the half with Poplar holding a 37-17 advantage.
The scoring of Mattie Falls Down, C. Martell and E. Martell led the way for Poplar to increase the margin to 47-22 during the third quarter. C. Martell hit a three-pointer to put the margin at 55-25 to end the third quarter.
Erickson accounted for seven points early in the fourth quarter as the Indians went on to earn a 74-37 victory.
The Indians will play at the Class B tip-off tourney in Lockwood on Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 9.
