Lustre Christian Girls Improve To 4-0 For Season
After defeating Froid/Lake, 47-37, in Scobey on Saturday, Dec. 9, Lustre’s girls’ basketball team improved to an impressive 4-0 for the young season.
While the school’s boys’ program has been gaining more attention in the last couple of years, it’s the best start in recent memory for the Lions in girls’ basketball.
“We’re getting the chemistry to flow,” senior Alexa Reddig said.
Senior Grace Brown added, “It’s exciting.”
The seniors agree that the team features more energy and is more aggressive this season.
Additional improvement has come with the addition of eighth-graders Kencia Brown and Lauren Fast to the varsity level.
“I knew they would do good, but I’m surprised how well,” Grace Brown said.
Although the Lions are pleased to have the same undefeated record as Lustre’s boys, the girls laugh that they still have a ways to go in order to catch the boys’ dunking abilities. “We have to get that going,” Reddig joked.
In the win over Froid/Lake, the Lions gained a 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by senior Aubri Holzrichter and a 16-footer by Reddig. A fast-break hoop by G. Brown ended the quarter with an 11-6 margin.
A free throw by K. Brown and another three-pointer by A. Holzricher increased the gap to 17-8 during the second quarter. The Lions went on to lead by a 21-11 half-time score.
An aerobatic drive by the super quick K. Brown resulted in a three-point play to put Lustre ahead 25-15 midway into the third quarter.
Froid/Lake battled back with four straight points by Mara Salvevold, but Lustre struck for the next six points on two baskets by Reddig and a hoop by K. Brown.
After a three-pointer by Froid/Lake’s Isabelle Nordwick pulled the Red Hawks to 32-27, three free tosses by K. Brown put the margin at 35-27 to end the third quarter.
The Lions then tallied the first six points of the fourth period on two drives by K. Brown and a hoop by Reddig for a 41-27 advantage.
Top scorers for Lustre were K. Brown with 19, Reddig with 11 and A. Holzricher with eight points.
Also scoring for the Lions were G. Brown with five, Hannah Brown with two and Fast with two.
Leading Froid/Lake were Salvevold with 11 and I. Nordwick with nine points.
The Lions will travel to Nashua on Friday, Dec. 15.
