Poplar Girls Defeat Froid/Lake Squad, 42-28
In a tight non-conference basketball battle, Poplar’s girls came away with a 42-28 victory over Froid/Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The visiting Red Hawks gained a 12-10 lead in the first half and started the third quarter on a good note when Mara Salvevold scored inside for a four-point advantage.
After Poplar’s Braelyn Nordwick scored off an assist from Mattie Falls Down, Froid/Lake’s Isabelle Nordwick hit a free throw at the 6:45 mark.
Poplar then pulled ahead on an inside basket by Rikki Belton and four straight points by Emma Rae Martell. I. Nordwick drove in for a basket to cut the margin to 18-17, but the Indians struck right back on a 15-footer by Sadee Archambeault.
The Indians closed the third quarter with the final eight points on a hoop by Nordwick and consecutive three-pointers by Cammie Martell for a 28-19 advantage.
The Red Hawks, however, kept battling in the fourth period. After four straight points by Brooklynn Nordwick, Jaeleigh Davidson scored off an assist from I. Nordwick to pull Froid/Lake to 30-25.
The Red Hawks still trailed by only five points until Poplar broke away with eight straight points on a pair of free throws by Nordwick, a layup by Falls Down, an inside hoop by Kessee Erickson and a basket by Falls Down off a pass from Archambeault en route to the victory.
Leading Poplar with eight points each were Falls Down, Erickson and Nordwick. C. Martell and E. Martell each added six points. Belton scored four and Archambeault had two.
B. Nordwick led the Red Hawks with 13 points. I. Nordwick tallied seven points.
Rounding out the scoring were Davidson with four, Salvevold with two, Avery Johnson with one and and Lilly Johnson with one.
