Clutch three-point shooting in the fourth quarter lifted the Culbertson Cowgirls over Brockton, 59-48, during District 2C action in Brockton on Thursday, Jan. 4.

The Cowgirls trailed by a 37-29 margin but started to turn the game around with the last five points of the third quarter on a pair of free throws by freshman Payton Labatte and a three-point play by freshman Emma Berwick to end the quarter at 37-34.

Brockton’s Tamryn Bauer opened the fourth quarter with a drive, but a three-pointer and 17-footer by Ivy Colvin pulled the Cowgirls even at 39-39.

Destiny Thompson, who finished with 27 points, put Culbertson into the lead with a three-pointer at the 4:14 mark. The scoring of Marlene Fish kept the Warriors close, but another three-pointer along with a steal and layup by Thompson put the margin at 50-43.

Fish hit a three-pointer at the 2:08 mark, but Culbertson’s Mariana Burciaga responded with a drive.

The Warriors’ Bauer knocked down two free throws for a 52-48 game with 1;05 remaining. The Cowgirls then pulled away with two straight baskets by Thompson and a three-pointer by Labatte.

After Thompson’s 27 points, Colvin was next high with nine points. Burciaga and Labatte added eight points each. Also scoring were Berwick with three and Leandra Perkins with two.

Brockton’s top scorers were Fish with 18 and KayJay First That Walks with 12 points. Rounding out the scoring were Bauer with nine, Ava Lone Bear with seven and Clara Clampitt with two points.

The Cowgirls trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but held a 27-23 half-time advantage.

Brockton then struck for the first 11 points of the third quarter on seven points by First That Walks and four points by LoneBear for a 3427 advantage.
