Lions Open With Win Over Savage
The Lustre Lions had four players score in double figures as the Lions knocked off Savage, 64-28, in the first round of the Eastern C boys’ basketball tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
The Lions never trailed in the contest. After a fastbreak basket by Savage’s Zane Pilgeram tied the game at 2-2, Lustre’s defense held the Warriors scoreless the rest of the period.
Three baskets by Johnslee Pierre, a drive by Cayden Klatt and a put-back by Byron Ewing put the Lions up by a 13-2 margin at the end of the opening quarter.
Five straight points, including a three-pointer, by Cam Reddig got the Lions off to a strong start in the second quarter.
The Warriors fought back on hoops by Hunter Sanders and Pilgeram, Terran Joseph answered with a three-point shot and a three-point play to put the Lions up 27-6.
Savage struck on threepointers by Adden Erickson and Adrian Smelser to cut the margin to 29-12, but a three-pointer by Klatt led Lustre to a 32-13 half-time advantage.
A three-pointer by Clay Reddig and a dunk by Pierre got the Lions off to a good note to open the third quarter.
Lustre outscored Savage by a 15-10 margin in the period.
Klatt led the Lions with 15 points. Cam Reddig and Pierre added 13 points each.
Joseph scored 10 points.
Rounding out Lustre’s scoring were Ewing with six, Joel Reddig with four and Clay Reddig with three.
Cam Reddig accounted for five assists and three steals.
Pierre had seven steals.
Top scorers for the Warriors were Pilgeram with nine and Sanders with seven points. Sanders grabbed 11 rebounds in the game.
