Local Optimist Club Plans School Supplies Campaign
The Optimist Club of Wolf Point is trying something different this year to benefit the community’s children.
The “Fill A Box” campaign seeks to gather school supplies and clothes to help those students who are short of the items. Wolf Point Optimist Club member Gloria Sande explains similar clubs in larger cities conduct a “Fill A Bus” campaign, but local members felt filling the back of a pickup was more realistic than an entire bus in Wolf Point.
“We will try to do the back of a pickup,” Sande said. “It’s never been done in Montana, as far as we know.”
The collection will be conducted as part of the club’s “triple event” on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wolf Point Area Museum’s parking lot. Going on at the same time will a community yard sale along with a free ice cream social.
Items needed for the “Fill A Box” campaign include pencils, paper, notebooks, pens, erasers and crayons. Sande is thrilled that Albertsons has already donated a good amount of pens and pencils.
In the other part of the box, collections will include T-shirts, socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, coats, jackets and boots. Clothes should be new or barely used.
All items in the box will be shared with all the local schools.
“I’m very excited about it,” Sande said. “Whenever I go anywhere, I add things to the pile.”
As far as the community yard sale, cost to rent a space and table is $20.
