Culbertson School Adds FCS, Foreign Language

Culbertson School students will have the opportunity to take family and consumer science classes for the first time in many years starting this fall.

Culbertson Superintendent of Schools Nicole Simonsen is excited about the addition. She doesn’t believe such classes have been available in Culbertson for at least 20 years.

Shelby Manning will serve as the family and consumer science instructor.

Simonsen encouraged adding the subject after seeing it was one of the school board’s goals in the past. The school is now in the process of preparing a room for family and consumer science instruction.

Another new offering for students will be learning the German language. Stefanie Newbill will instruct the class one period a day.

Simonsen said switching from a trimester schedule to a seven-period semester schedule made it easier to offer these classes.

“I’m really excited for this school year,” she said.

Culbertson has also been successful in recruiting new elementary teachers for the upcoming school year.

April Wills is moving over from Bainville to teach fourth grade in Culbertson. Sarah Schmidt is the school’s new second-grade teacher.

Kelly Evenson will serve as a third-grade teacher. She has 25 years of teaching experience in another state. After moving to Sidney, she decided she wanted to continue her teaching career.

Clayton Marchwich, who student taught in Culbertson last school year, will teach first-grade students.

In addition, Shannon O’Brien will be Culbertson’s new agriculture teacher. She was a student teacher in Wibaux last year.
