Fertilizer Plans Take Another Step Forward

Another step apparently has been accomplished in the goal of establishing the Eastern Montana Fertilizer Plant near Culbertson.

Roosevelt County commissioners have received word from John Mues of Cyan H2 regarding progress of an extended credit-worthy offtake agreement.

“While not yet document in hand, we wanted to let you know that we believe we’ve finally achieved the needed offtake agreement and it is being put to writing as we speak by the offtaker,” Mues wrote in the letter earlier this month. “If the written terms reflect what has been recently negotiated, we believe we are in good shape and will be aggressively reengaging all other facets of the project.”

The Roosevelt County Commissioners were pleased to hear the communication from Mues.

“It’s just one more step,” Roosevelt County Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said.

Oelkers added that he is often asked by area residents about the progress of the potential plant.

“It’s all positive reaction to it,” Oelkers said. “It would be good economic development to the community.”

The company currently has its 442-acre site under legal control.

The project is estimated to cost about $1.6 billion. The hope is that the lone public assistance will come from a loan from the U.S. Department of Energy that will be paid off with interest.

Cyan H2 is a Montana veteranowned business. Four principles are veterans including two West Point graduates and two U.S. Naval graduates.

Early estimates are that the project will create 3,200 jobs including 2,000 during the construction phase, 200 permanent jobs and 1,000 of in-direct jobs created through economic opportunities.
