Children Learn About Smokey Bear
Bureau of Indian Affairs Fort Peck Fire prevention technician Janet Anderson spoke to area children about fires and Smokey Bear during a presentation at the Roosevelt County Library in Wolf Point on Thursday, Aug. 8.
The event was conducted to celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday. A cake was provided for the children to enjoy. A balloon displayed in honor of Smokey was also hanging.
Anderson demonstrated to the children how to set up a safe fire site. She discussed safety methods including keeping the fire the size that is desired by creating a barrier.
She then read the story of Smokey Bear to the children attending.
Anderson arrived in Poplar in May after working for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service.
Since 1944, Smokey Bear has taught millions of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires.
