Cowboys Hope To Contend In Tough Football League
The Culbertson Cowboys begin their football season with 25 players including eight seniors for the upcoming campaign.
“We’re really heavy on upper classmen. There are a lot of seniors and juniors,” Culbertson Coach Brian Manning said.
Seniors include Bridger Salvevold, Reese Moon, Gavin Deen, Mark Kirkaldie, Patrick Bowlby, Henry Colvin, Josue Mena and Dawson Bergum.
Kirkaldie and Salvevold were each All-State selections last year. Receiving All-Conference honors were Salvevold, Kirkaldie, Deen and junior Micah Eagleboy.
“I’m optimistic just because of who we’re all bringing back,” Manning said.
He added about the seniors, “I expect most of them to have a good season. The main thing is battling health. They are all good kids and fairly talented.”
He feels overall speed and depth on the lines should be the team’s strengths.
“I expect some of our younger guys, juniors and sophomores, to be contributors,” Manning said.
The coach is also excited about having Cassidy Obergfell added to the coaching staff as defensive coordinator.
Manning calls the conference schedule a “murderer’s row.” Top squads are expected to include defending state champion Fairview, Circle, Wibaux and Scobey.
The top four teams advance to the playoffs.
“I expect every game to be highly competitive,” Manning said.
The Cowboys will open their season at Forsyth on Friday, Aug. 31. Culbertson’s first home game is Friday, Sept. 13, against Fairview.
