100 Years Ago

Public School To Begin Year

The Wolf Point schools and the rural schools of District 45 will open Monday, Sept. 8. The buildings are being put in readiness by a thorough renovating. The Northside city building has been kalsomined, The complete list of instructors was not available, but Clerk Lovell states that the Wide Awake School will be taught by Marian Waler and the Pioneer School by Flora Walter, both well known here as former residents. Superintendent Livingston has not returned but is expected by the first of the month.

Bootleggers

These days of illicit dealing in moonshine cannot but bring to the mind of the pioneer similar conditions. There were plenty of traders in those days who made it a business of trading in whiskey with the Indians and who seemed to be of the opinion that their occupation was a respectable one as long as they could keep out of the toils of the law.

Better Babies

Babies from the country and babies from town, ranging in age from twelve months to five years, will be scored and judged during the “Better Babies” contest, dental clinic and child health conference which will be one of the features of the 1924 State Fair at Helena,Sept. 28-29. Class One is for the little folks from cities of over 1,000 population. There are four divisions in this and, in Class Two, which is for the little boys and girls from the country. First division draws babies from 12 to 24 months of age; Division B, 25 to 36 months; Division C, 37 to 48 months; Division D, 49 to 60 months.

Seven New Teachers

With a complete teaching staff procured, Wolf Point Public Schools will open Sept. 6, beginning that date with the registrations of pupils, it was announced this week by B. Ford Slaght, superintendent. Not since before the last war has the faculty been complete with all personnel this far in advance of the opening of school. No resignations have been received since initial contracts were signed as another feature not existing for many years.

Serena Long and Betty who have spent the past 10 months in Statesville, N.C., returned Thursday morning. Mrs. D. L. Stratton and Mrs. C. J. Quiring entertained a group of ladies Thursday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Henri Dassonville who will soon leave to teach at Bozeman. The hostess presented the honored guest a gift. Lunch was served and the afternoon was spent sewing.

Vida

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kelly left on Tuesday morning for their home in Snohomish, Wash., after spending several weeks at the L. C. Kelly and G. Schock Jr. homes.

Girl Scouts

Wolf Point Girl Scouts, accompanied by a group of Culbertson girls, left Wolf Point at 8 o’clock Wednesday morning to a Girl Scout established camp at Niehart. Mrs. Edgar Bowers accompanied the Culbertson girls to Wolf Point, Camp counselors Jeanne Slaght and Mrs. Marlin Johnson and a general chaperone, Mrs. George Meister, accompanied the girls to camp. Camp counselors are assigned definite fields to instruct, such as swimming, hiking, horseback riding, camp craft and singing.

County Budget

The Roosevelt County commissioners trimmed the general fund and poor fund and increased three other funds to arrive at the final total budget of $1,642,546.47 last week compared with a $1,632,630.47 preliminary budget proposed to them about a month ago. The total county-wide budget amounted to $1,212,-287.30 compared with the preliminary budget of $1,213,041.54. The final mill levy stands at 51.35 for all funds and 42.80 countywide. School will Host Educators

Approximately 500 educators and school support staff from Wolf Point and 17 nearby communities will meet at Wolf Point High School Friday, Sept. 6, for a full day of in-service workshops in more than 40 topic areas ranging from art to vocational agriculture.

The day’s session is being sponsored by Superintendent of Public Instruction Dolores Colburg as part of the ninesite series of regional workshops around Montana this school year. Participation by schools is voluntary, but most have chosen to attend.
