Poplar’s cross-country is enjoying a strong turnout this season under new head coach John Wetsit.

Members of the girls’ squad include Mattie Falls Down, Amelia Weeks, Cammie Martell, Kelly Azure, Journey Gourneau, Kelbi Blount, Kacie Colgan and Alara Parshall.

Colgan finished in 28th place at last year’s state meet. Azure, Weeks, Falls Down, Martell and Parshall also ran well at last year’s state meet.

Leaders of the boys’ team will include Elijin Grey Bear, Wilder Bearcub, Bostyn Azure, Navarjo Escarcega, Stephen Smoker, Raylando Red Eagle, Colton Dupree, Jayden Eder and Ezekial Gourneau.

Grey Bear and Bearcub placed in the top 55 at last year’s state meet.

“I’m really thrilled with the numbers,” Wetsit said. The program includes about 20 athletes. “I’m looking for real growth from them.”

Wetsit’s coaching experience includes 10 years in Frazer and four years in Wolf Point.

“I’ve always thought it would be an honor to work in Poplar’s program,” Wetsit said. “They have a lot of great history.”

He is pleased with the work that several runners conducted during the summer. He feels the Indians will be a force in both the boys’ and girls’ sides this year.

The Indians will open their season at the Wolf Point Invitational on Friday, Aug. 30.
