WPCO Holds Successful Back To School Event
The Wolf Point Community Organization reviewed the participation for its back to school bash during its monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 19.
Chair Holly Hamilton reported that WPCO purchased 360 backpacks for area students. A total of 230 backpacks were handed out on Sunday, Aug. 18. Parents and children were able to pick up backpacks on Monday as well.
Hamilton said the remaining backpacks will be given to HeadStarts at Wolf Point and Poplar along with area students.
Officials are still waiting for the arrival of 360 boxes of crayons. Those boxes will be given to local schools for students to utilize.
Members were told that Jason Hamilton Sr. resigned as the organization’s secretary/ treasurer on Aug. 4.
Marie Castro was nominated to be the new secretary/ treasurer and she was approved by members.
In her Tribal Executive Board report, Roxanne Gourneau said that a “brand new” feeding facility in Wolf Point will be located on Sixth Avenue. She added that a new casino is being built in Poplar. The casino will have 150 machines.
Gourneau stressed that the tribes are not taking over Indian Health Services next October. The tribes are doing research about the services.
WPCO approved a request for $1,000 for the NDO youth rodeo to be held Aug. 31 at the Poplar Saddle Club.
The group approved $1,500 for Pastor Danny Lindsay to assist with his ministry on the streets.
Wolf Point’s recreation director Marianne Zilkoski Rees reported that $1,290 from WPCO was used for baseball/softball registrations and $6,300 for individual and family swim passes.
