Bainville Falls Short In Football Opener Against Jordan
Bainville got off to a strong start, but Jordan bounced back to outscore the Bulldogs, 55-49, in six-man football action in Bainville on Saturday, Aug. 31.
A 24-yard pass from Rowan Wilson to Trevor Robertus put the Bulldogs into Jordan territory on their opening drive. Wilson then connected with Robertus on a 32-yard touchdown pass. A throw from Wilson to Isaiah Bjorge on the conversion put the margin at 7-0.
The Mustangs, however, answered quickly when speedy Hayes Bollinger returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs came right back with a 56-yard scoring drive highlighted with a pass reception by Kaiden Holmes. Wilson ran 18 yards for a touchdown and then hit Keagan Vaira on a conversion pass for a 14-6 lead.
Jordan’s drive inside Bainville territory ended when Robertus intercepted a pass at the 30. The Bulldogs struck quickly on a 47-yard throw from Wilson to Holmes for a 20-6 lead with 4:59 left in the opening quarter.
The Mustangs pulled to 20-12 when Bollinger took the ensuing kickoff 59 yards for another touchdown.
Jordan closed the gap to 20-18 on a 26-yard pass from Jayden Saylor to Koby Saylor early in the second quarter. The Mustangs then gained a 24-20 lead on a 37-yard completion from J. Saylor to K. Saylor midway into the quarter.
The Bulldogs received great field possession when Bjorge made a tackle at the Jordan 24 on a fourth-down play. Wilson raced in on a 13yard run to put the Bulldogs ahead 26-24 at the half.
Jordan, however, gained the upper-hand during the third quarter and early parts of the fourth period. The Mustangs grabbed a 30-26 lead on a four-yard run by Kaleb Bollinger with 4:34 left in the third period. A 12-yard touchdown throw from J. Saylor to AJ Murnion put the margin at 37-26 early in the fourth quarter. Jordan increased the difference to 43-26 on a 59-yard pass from J. Saylor to Brody Twitchell.
The Bulldogs kept battling as a strike from Wilson to Robertus resulted in a 34yard gain and a first down at the Jordan 15. Two plays later, Wilson connected with Parker Berwick on a nine-yard touchdown pass. Berwick kicked the conversion for a 43-34 game with 5:37 left.
After Jordan scored on a 10-yard dash by K. Saylor, Bainville marched quickly down the field for an 11-yard touchdown run by Wilson with 3:43 left. Berwick’s kick cut the gap to 49-42.
Bainville’s defense led by Haedyn Wills and Berwick stopped Jordan on two plays, but the Mustangs then reached the end zone on a 38yard pass from J. Saylor to K. Saylor to put the score at 5542 with 2:11 remaining.
A pass from Wilson to Bjorge got the Bulldogs in scoring position. A 29-yard pass to Robertus was good for a first down at the one. From there, Wilson scored with 1:14 left. Wilson threw to Holmes for a conversion and a 55-49 game. Jordan recovered the on-sides kick attempt and then ran out the clock.
The Bulldogs will return to action on the road against Froid/Lake on Saturday, Sept. 7.
