Poplar Indian Days Celebration Held At Legion Park

The Poplar Indian Days Labor Day Weekend Celebration was held at American Legion Park Aug. 30-Sept. 1. Attendance was strong and weather cooperated with mild temps.

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester made an appearance Sunday and carried the Fort Peck Tribes flag in the arena during grand entry.

Tragedy stuck Saturday, Aug. 31, when dancer Robert Boy Murray of Poplar went into cardiac arrest and died. Prayers were said for the Murray family throughout the remainder of the weekend.

Spotted Bull Recovery Resource Center and other sponsors hosted a corresponding horsemanship and bronc riding day, and the schedule was packed with daily dance specials.

Patrick Mitsuing of Loon Lake, S.D., took first place in the men’s fancy category, followed by Poplar’s RJ Tveter. Apollo Jounson of Warm Springs, Ore., and Trevor Ewak of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan.

Poplar’s Kelsey Haywahe won first place in men’s grass, followed by Eya Fox of White Shield, N.D., Oswego’s Gage Ackerman and Raynen McNab of Touchweed, Saskatchewan.

The men’s traditional category went to Donovan Abbey of Manderee, N.D., followed by Will Hedgepeth of Windson, Ontario, Aron Abbey of Mandaree, N.D., and Matthew White Cloud of Standing Buffalo, Saskatchewan.

The women’s fancy shawl competition went to Eatosh Bird of Sioux Falls, S.D., with Nadine Okey of Regina, Saskatchewan, in second, Carrie McNab of Gordon 86, Saskatchewan, in third and Morning Rose Louie of Spokane, Wash., in fourth place.

Women’s jingle went to Helsley Abbey of Mandaree, N.D., followed by Ree Spoonhunter of Browning, Asjha Treter of Lawrence, Kan., and Kszaady Beartail, Fort Berthold.

Women’s traditional went to Randi Bird of White Shield, N.D., followed by Nelenah Grey Eyes of Spirit Lake, Wash., Krista Marie Goodwill of Fort Qu’Appelle, MHA, and Faith Good Striker of Blood Tribe, Alberta.

Crazy Horse Poison of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan-Fort Qu’Appelle, Fort Berthold, won men’s golden age, followed by Tommy Gray of Lodge Pole, Russell Deane of New Town, N.D., and Ole Gray Bull of Billings.

Women’s golden age went to Gracie HerManyHorses of Bakersfield, N.D., followed by Lisa Ewak of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu’Appelle, MHA, Luanne Kickingwoman of Missoula and Andi Gray of Chinook.

Teen girls’ fancy Shawl went to Rayanna Bird of White Shield, N.D., followed by Adison Vetler of Porquepine, N.D., Cheyenne Bison of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan, and Makenna Bird of Poplar.

Teen girls’ jingle went to Laitya Allen of Rapid City, S.D., followed by Josephine Russell of Hays, Lilianna Longknife, of Harlem and Mitana Taylor of Sioux Valley, Manitoba.

Teen girls’ traditional went to Sonja Snider of Porquepine, N.D., followed by Kahlani

in Poplar.

Hoops Mazaawasicuna, of Poplar, Wolf Point’s Scarlett Brien and Stacey Ann Dustyhorn of Regina.

Teen boys’ fancy bustle went to Chante Bison of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan, followed by Lelan Misuing of Loon Lake, Saskatchewan, Terton Bear of Brockton and Wyatt Spotted Bird, also of Brockton.

Teen boys’ grass went to Aiden Spotted Elk of Poplar, followed by Tanner Abbey of Mandaree, N.D., Jayden Eder of Poplar and Treyton Mount, of Fort Belknap.

Teen boys’ traditional went to Anythony Mazawasicuna Jr. of Poplar, followed by Brockton’s Weston Lambert, Poplar’s Dane Moran and Jack Ruiz of Parshal, N.D.

Ari Mitsuing of Loon Lake, Saskatchewan, won the junior boys’ fancy category. He was followed by Jodan Moran of New Town, N.D., Brockton’s Braxton Crawford and Tyson Craft, also of Brockton.

Junior boys’ grass went to Wolf Pointer Kelsyn Chase, followed by Harlem’s Zak Hoops, Jayrian Baker of New Town, N.D., and Ahsini Abbey of Mandaree, N.D.

Junior boys’ traditional went to A.J. Abbey of Mandaree, N.D. He was followed by Poplar’s Quade Boyd, Medicine Bear Jr., also of Poplar and Emerson Boyd Jr., of Poplar.

Junior girls’ fancy went to Poplar’s Aaliya Roberts, followed by Harlem’s Azlyn Weston, Mya Rosmus of Sioux Valley, Manitoba, and Brockton’s Layla Roberts.

Junior girls’ jingle went to Maile Spottedbird of Brockton, followed by Brockton’s Terrie BigTrack, June Cleveland of Badger Creek, Idaho, and Wolf Point’s Nevaeh Ownspipe.

Junior girls’ traditional went to Brockton’s Madalynn Spottedwolf, followed by Winrosa Moore of Ocean Man, Saskatchewan, Tori Werk and Brayleigh Werk of Fort Belknap.

Frankie Crawford was princess, with Sara Week serving as princess first attendant. Mila Gramling was junior princess and Piper St. Germaine was mini princess. Junior traveling princess was Brylee MaRae Eder and mini traveling princess was Mesa Gramling. Willy Greybull was headman dancer and Jennifer GrayHawk was headwoman dancer. Host drum was Fort Peck Sioux.
