Poplar Falls Short In Home Volleyball Match Against Fairview
The Poplar Indians put up a good fight but lost at home against Fairview by a 21-25, 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, final on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Poplar held a 16-14 lead in the first set before Fairview used the net play of Macy Tjelde and Isabelle Fry to gain a 21-17 advantage.
Two strong net plays by Poplar’s Braelyn Nordwick pulled the Indians back to 22-21. The Warriors, however, tallied the final three points including kills by Carly Buxbaum and Tjelde. In the second set, the Indians were behind by a 20-15 margin until two kills by Nordwick cut the gap to 20-18.
Lilliana O’Neal then stepped up with two blocks and a kill to put Poplar ahead 21-20. Nordwick scored another kill to help Poplar earn a 23-20 lead.
Fairview came as close as 24-23 before Poplar posted the game’s final point.
The strong net play of Tjelde led Fairview to a 14-6 advantage in the third set. Poplar struck back on a spike by Rebecca Gorder. A kill by Quintana Young got the Indians as close as 15-10, but Fairview moved out to a 2013 lead.
A pair of kills by Tjelde down the stretch helped Fairview earn the 25-14 victory.
A spike by Gracelynn Free and an ace by Kloker led the Warriors to a 19-10 lead in the fourth set. Poplar battled back to 21-14 on kills by O’Neal, Nordwick and Moran.
A tip by Makenzie Crawford and an ace by O’Neal closed the gap to 21-16. Fairview then struck for the match’s last four points.
Leaders for the Indians included Nordwick with 11 kills and two aces. O’Neal finished with three blocks and two aces.
Gorder accounted for 19 assists. Angelina Escarcega had 28 digs.
Poplar’s JVs won a five-set match over Fairview. The Indians took the last game by an 18-16 final.
