Study Aims To Improve Transportation Safety

Officials are urging residents to complete surveys regarding the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes’ safety action plan.

Fort Peck transportation officers were in attendance and handing out surveys at the Wolf Point Community Organization’s meeting last week. They note the plan is for the entire reservation including Wolf Point, Poplar, Fort Kipp, Brockton, Oswego and Frazer.

Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board member Roxanne Gourneau stressed the importance of completing the surveys during the meeting if residents want roads and streets to be improved. “This makes a difference,” she told organization members.

The plan seeks to identify the tribe’s transportation needs and prepare a comprehensive strategy to prevent fatalities and serious injury crashes along roadways and streets within the tribe’s jurisdiction. The plan will include recommendations to improve safety for all users of the transportation system including people who walk, bike or roll.

The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ FortPeckCSAP.

Survey questions include how do you usually travel, what mode of travel do you use most often, what are your transportation safety concerns in Fort Peck and what ideas do you have for improving transportation safety.

The study schedule is set through July 2025. The plan will include low cost, high impact strategies such as street lighting, safe walkways and improved signage to increase safety. Study benefits are anticipated to include identify existing safety issues, determine near and long-term safety improvements, evaluate and prioritize potential safety improvements and identify potential funding sources.
