Wolves Earn First Victory Of Football Season In Shepherd
The Wolf Point Wolves accounted for a dominating defensive performance to defeat Shepherd, 6-0, on Friday, Sept. 20.
“The offensive line played really well. The backs ran very hard. Our offense was able to command the game running the football,” Wolf Point Coach Anthony Red Cloud said. “We had several opportunities to score but only punched the one in, which ultimately was all that was needed as our defense played a phenomenal football game. The defense was disciplined, tenacious and relentless all night long.”
After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolves’ defense made a key play when a bad snap resulted in Jesse Reed recovering a fumble at the Shepherd 25.
Two straight runs by Kasey Reed produced a first down at the 11. On third down and one, Mike Bell battled for a first down to the one.
K. Reed then scored on a quarterback sneak with 5:25 remaining in the half.
The Wolves were soon in Shepherd territory again. Runs by Bell and K. Bell advanced the ball to the 34 for a first down. A pass play from K. Reed to Bell was good for 27 yards to the 16 for another first down.
Wolf Point drove as deep as the nine before being stopped near the end of the half.
The Mustangs marched inside Wolf Point territory during the third quarter. The threat ended thanks to a batted down pass by Dashaun Jackson and a quarterback sack by J. Reed.
With the ball around the 35, the Wolves failed on a fake punt attempt and Shepherd gained possession at the Wolf Point 37. Wolf Point’s defense stopped Shepherd on three straight plays to end the third quarter.
The strong running of K. Reed, J. Reed and Bell took time off the clock during fourth quarter action, but Shepherd had one final chance when the Mustangs started a drive at their own 21 with 2:01 remaining.
The Mustangs were able to advance to midfield. Shepherd completed a final pass but were short of the end zone as time expired.
Leading the Wolves’ rushing attack were J. Reed with 77 yards and K. Reed with 76 yards.
Wolf Point’s defense held Shepherd to 104 total yards.
J. Reed led the Wolves with four tackles, three assists and three sacks. Sam Boysun finished with three tackles and a sack.
Sean Hamilton had two tackles and three assists. Lydell Ackerman accounted for three tackles and three assists. K. Reed added two tackles and an assist.
Wolf Point will host Cut Bank in conference action on Friday, Sept. 27.
