Culbertson overcame a slow start and stopped Ekalaka, 50-16, in Eastern C football action on the road on Friday, Sept. 27.

After a fumble by the Cowboys, Ekalaka scored the game’s first touchdown on a three-yard run with 3:16 left in the opening period.

Down by an 8-0 margin, Culbertson struck back when Bridger Salvevold and Dawson Bergum connected on a fourth-down pass that covered 35 yards. Salvevold ran in the conversion for an 8-8 deadlock with 1:12 left in the first period.

The Cowboys went ahead to stay when Salvevold raced 52 yards on a quarterback keeper run with six minutes remaining in the half. Salvevold passed to Reese Moon for the conversion and a 16-8 advantage.

After stopping the Bulldogs on a fourth-down play, the Cowboys reached the end zone on a 33-yard dash by Moon with 3:56 left in the half. Mauricio Mena kicked the conversion for a 23-8 lead.

Ekalaka then made a big play when the Bulldogs blocked a punt and took over at the Culbertson 12. Culbertson’s defense, however, stopped the threat, and the Cowboys gained possession with only 25 seconds remaining in the half.

Culbertson ended the half on a high note when Salvevold hit Bergum for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Bergum, a senior, made the catch at the Ekalaka 15 and ran in for the touchdown for a 29-8 score at intermission.

The Cowboys struck early in the third quarter when Moon broke loose from three tacklers en route to a 37-yard touchdown run. Mena’s kick put the margin at 36-8 with 10:43 left in the period.

Culbertson’s next score came on a 77-yard run by Salvevold with 7:56 remaining in the quarter. The kick by Mena increased the gap to 43-8.

Culbertson’s last touchdown of the game came on a 22-yard dash by Salvevold with 9:27 remaining. The Bulldogs scored their second touchdown in the final minutes.

The Cowboys will play at Scobey on Friday, Oct. 4.
