Mena Gets Kick Of Living In Culbertson
Senior Profile
One could say that Culbertson High School senior Josue Mena gets a kick out of playing football and living in eastern Montana.
Mena, who moved from Texas to Culbertson three years ago, said he is grateful that he now can call the community home.
“I sure do,” Mena answered to whether he enjoys Culbertson. “I like that it’s small and how friendly the area is.”
He does miss playing soccer, but he finds kicking for Culbertson’s football team as a good substitute.
Mena’s favorite things about kicking include reaching the end zone on kickoffs and making conversion kicks.
He also plays running back and linebacker at times for the Cowboys.
“I like kicking the most because it reminds me of playing soccer,” he said.
Mena feels his range for a field goal is about 45 yards. On the spur of the moment, he attempted about a 50-yard field goal near the end of the homecoming game and the try was blocked. He feels he could make a kick from the distance though.
“I had confidence, but it was nerve racking,” he said. “I wasn’t prepared for it.”
Along with football, he has tried playing basketball for the Cowboys.
Another activity is band where he has played the trombone for seven years. Asked if he enjoys playing the instrument, he replied, “I sure do.” He has competed well at music festivals.
He doesn’t have a favorite class, but he likes Culbertson’s teachers. “There are all good teachers so they are about even for me,” Mena said.
He still isn’t sure about his plans after high school or his career path at this time.
