Michelle Dorene Aims-Back, 37, of Poplar and Spirit Lake, N.D., died Sept. 22, 2024.

She was born in Williston, N.D., to Mavis Hernandez and Francis AimsBack. She grew up in Poplar where she attended the Poplar schools and eventually graduated the eighth grade from Wahpeton, N.D. She then attended Poplar High School and later attended Job Corps at Kicking Horse and Clearfield, Utah, where she received her high school diploma and earned her CNA certificate.

When she returned from Job Corps, she met her lifelong friend, Jeremy GrayWater Sr. They started their family and eventually moved to Spirit Lake, N.D., where she worked at the casino and as a cashier. She returned to Poplar for a short while and was employed at Tribal Express but then returned to North Dakota.

She is survived by her lifelong friend, Jeremy GrayWater Sr.; children, Lillian, Alex “Chuck,” Jeremy Jr. “JuJu,” Elizabeth, Callen, Mavis “Mavie,” Dillon and Raven Gray-Water, all of North Dakota; sisters, Robyn Hernandez, Margaret Hernandez and Elayne Scott; adopted father, Keith Olson; father, Francis AimsBack of Browning; as well as other brothers, sisters and grandparents.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Chad Hernandez and Conrad Scott.

A viewing took place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Poplar Cultural Center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Poplar Cultural Center. Interment will be at Poplar City Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
