Students, Staff Recognize Special Week
Native American Week
Native American Week in Wolf Point was highlighted by students attending a pow-wow at the Wadopana Arbor on Thursday, Sept. 26.
Among the participants during the celebration were Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board members Jestin Dupree and Roxanne Gourneau.
“It’s important for people to get along whether you’re tribal or non-tribal,” Dupree said of the event.
He was pleased that educator Rain Turcotte invited him to the school’s pow-wow. Dupree was a previous school board member in Poplar.
“You have to support our youth,” Dupree said. “They are the up-andcoming group.” Gourneau, who is Wolf Point School Board chair, was very pleased with the event’s turnout.
“It’s excellent,” Gourneau said of the event while enjoying the community feed. “As you can see, it’s a community gathering.”
Gourneau said she witnessed a lot of joy and a good amount of visiting.
“People don’t visit enough,” she added.
Educators served the meal and also took part in some of the dances.
“We are the Tribes and the school,” Gourneau said of community members. “We’re all becoming one body, the school and the Tribes.”
The celebration included the Poplar River Boys playing a flag song and a victory song.
Students were involved in many activities throughout the week including tipi raising and listening to guest speakers.
Theme days were Native Bling Day, Braids Day, Roc’ Your Moccs Day or Native Thread Day and Ribbons and Regalia Day.
