Red Hawks Lose High Scoring Game Against Thunder
In a game where 100 points were scored, MonDak made a few more big plays, especially in the second half, to down Froid/Lake, 58-42, in six-man football action on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Red Hawks enjoyed a bit of the upper-hand for most of the first half. The game’s first big play was a fumble recovery by Jacob Martensen in the end zone to end MonDak’s opening drive. Froid/Lake went on to move deep inside MonDak territory on the running of Joseph Robertson, Roberto Orozco and Eddie Orozco. Robertson fought into the end zone from the one with 5:39 left in the opening quarter.
The Thunder responded with a 64-yard scoring drive. Dilan Wade, a 6-2 freshman, scored from the three with 2:45 left in the period for a 6-6 deadlock.
A pass from Robertson to Rylan Young helped the Red Hawks head into scoring territory on their next possession. E. Orozco scored from the two to put Froid/Lake ahead 12-6 with 8:30 left in the half of the game played in strong wind conditions.
The Thunder’s next touchdown came on a 24-yard dash by Wade with 7:33 remaining.
After a nice kickoff return by Robertson to the MonDak 28, Robertson scored on a three-yard run to put the Red Hawks ahead 18-12 with 6:26 left in the half. The Thunder, however, responded with a four-yard run by Wade with 5:15 on the clock.
Froid/Lake came away empty handed on its next possession partly due to a third-down sack by TJ Boyer. The Thunder reached the end zone on a 13-yard pass from Wade to Cade Else for a 24-18 half-time lead.
The Red Hawks tied the game with a 56-yard scoring drive to open the third quarter. After a pass from Robertson to Martensen was good for a first down at the MonDak 34, the Red Hawks picked up another first down on a throw from Robertson to R. Orozco. On a run from the one, E. Orozco scored for a 24-24 deadlock.
The Thunder moved back ahead on a 21-yard run by Wade with 7:09 left in the quarter. Thomas Arnson ran in the conversion for a 31-24 advantage.
MonDak recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and went on to score on another run by Wade. Arnson got in for the conversion for a 38-24 margin.
Froid/Lake kept battling as Robertson fired a pass to Martensen in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown play to cut the margin to 38-30.
A 10-yard dash by Arnson increased MonDak’s lead to 44-30 with 1:45 remaining in the period. After stopping the Red Hawks on a fourth-down attempt, the Thunder gained a 52-30 lead on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Wade to Draygen Buechler.
Robertson broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown run to pull Froid/Lake to 52-36 with 7:12 remaining in the contest. The Thunder added a score on a 17-yard run by Wade for a 58-36 lead with 4:49 left.
After a fumble recovery by Teegan Fossum, Froid/Lake’s final touchdown came on a two-yard run by E. Orozco for a 58-42 score with 1:46 remaining.
