Safety First Firefighters Stress Prevention To Students
Area firefighters visited elementary schools in recognition of Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 6-12.
Wolf Point Volunteer Fire Department training officer Cam Burshia accompanied with firefighter Jacob Boysun and Sparky the fire dog stressed the importance of smoke detectors during a program at Northside Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Burshia noted that there should be a smoke detector at each level of a house. He also made sure that students knew the sound of a smoke detector.
“If there’s smoke above your neck, stay low to the ground,” Burshia said.
They also explained the attire that firefighters wear and children shouldn’t be fearful of the gear.
“We’re here to help and protect you,” Burshia said.
Janet Anderson, BIA Fort Peck Fire prevention specialist, talked safety measures with outdoor fires.
She explained there are not smoke detectors outside. “We have to smell and have to look,” Burshia said.
Anderson asked how many of the students have enjoyed smores over a campfire. “Fire can be a really cool thing, but it’s something we need to be careful of,” she added.
Smokey Bear made a guest appearance. Everybody chanted together, “Only You can prevent wildfires.”
