Twice a week, cooks Carol Rasmussen and Kam Murnion welcome some of their neighbors to the Bainville Senior Center, also known as “The Golden Circle Center,” for a full luncheon meal through the county’s Council on Aging.

Rasmussen, who has helped prepare the meals since 2009, said usually between 10-15 senior citizens are served the meal, which includes a salad bar.

It’s usually a fun time for seniors, but on this particular Thursday, a long-time friend is remembered by the participants. A placemat with a photo of Lyle Lambert, who died on Oct. 9, was stationed where he always sat, near the front of the table by the door.

“His wife would always sit across from him and his brother would sit next to him,” Rasmussen fondly remember. She points out that Lambert was always active with the senior citizens and was a past president.

Rasmussen says she enjoys cooking a good, healthy meal for the seniors. Cost is only $6 for those 60 years or older.

“They actually like liver and onions the best,” she said. She tries to cook the meal about two or three times a year.

Other favorites include tater tot casserole, beef roast and pork roast.

“They like comfort food,” Rasmussen said. “They like meat and potatoes.”

One unique custom is that the men sit at one of the tables and the women sit at the other table.

“The women worked it up that way,” Darrel Rasmussen joked.

After the meal, the women usually hang around and play card games or Dominoes.

“They stay and visit quite a while,” Carol Rasmussen said.
