Cowboys Roll To Win In Wibaux
The Culbertson Cowboys scored twice even before their first offensive possession and downed Wibaux, 56-12, in a conference football game on the road on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Culbertson got on the scoreboard when Bridger Salvevold blocked a punt and took the ball into the end zone with 10:24 left in the opening quarter. Josue Mena kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
After Wibaux was forced to punt the ball again, Reese Moon accounted for a return of 73 yards for a touchdown. Mena’s kick was good for a 14-0 advantage.
Strong defensive plays by Salvevold, Micah Eagle Boy and Mark Kirkaldie forced another punt, and the Cowboys took over at the Wibaux 25. On first down, Moon broke loose for a touchdown with 5:10 left in the first quarter.
A solid running game and a pass interference penalty led the Longhorns deep inside Culbertson territory midway into the second period. A 14yard touchdown pass closed the margin to 21-6 with 5:46 remaining in the half.
The Cowboys, however, soon got back into scoring position when Salvevold raced 44 yards for a first down at the Wibaux six. Two plays later, Moon reached the end zone. Salvevold ran in the conversion for a 29-6 lead.
Culbertson ended the half in exciting fashion when Salvevold connected with Ian Snyder on a 45-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining for a 35-6 advantage.
The Longhorns struck first in the third quarter on an eight-yard run to cut the gap to 35-12 with 6:50 left in the quarter.
The Longhorns then made another big play by recovering a fumble to end Culbertson’s drive. The Cowboys’ Kaden Featherston and Eagle Boy ended Wibaux’s possession. Starting at the Wibaux 22, the Cowboys reached the end zone on a dash by Salvevold. Mena’s kick was good for a 42-12 lead.
Culbertson increased its lead to 49-12 on a 17-yard throw from Salvevold to Kirkaldie with 1:36 left in the third quarter.
After a fumble recovery by Moon, the Cowboys went on to score on a three-yard run by Moon on the first play of the fourth quarter. Mena’s kick increased the margin to 56-12.
The Cowboys will host Circle on Friday, Oct. 25, in a game to decide second place in the conference.
