Tori Bell and her daughter McKenna received a surprising call Sunday, Oct. 20, from Make A Wish Foundation. McKenna was given her wish of a camper, provided by CamperWorld in Billings, in recognition of her fight with cancer.
On Oct. 25, Lustre hosted Frontier School where the junior high girls won 24-15, and the junior high boys won 3728. Both teams played hard. LGS jamboree girls lost a heart-breaker by one point, 19-20. The LGS jamboree boys lost 15-23. They are improving their skills.
On Oct. 29, the Lustre Grade School teams traveled to Frazer to play basketball. It was spirit week at school, so some traveled in their get up — pajama day. But, they were in proper sports uniforms to play diligently. Sometimes it’s hard to remember they are still learning and that’s what this level is all about. Frazer won the first three games (jamboree girls, jamboree boys and junior high girls) and Lustre won the final game (junior high boys). It was a barn-burner with Lustre jumping out ahead, but falling behind and climbing back to tie the game at 20. By the fourth quarter, it was fastpaced, solid basketball on both sides and very exciting. 31-29 with Frazer ahead, but the Lustre boys did not give up, but worked unselfishly to win 35-34, only by one point with two seconds on the clock at the final bucket. The starting five on this team are Gunner Damboise, Coleman Hilkemann, Josef Olfert, Liam Reyneke and Justin Schiller. They are all seventh graders as LGS has no fellows in grade eight. Randy Reddig is the head coach. Lisa Neufeld is the coach for the girls.
The New Covenant Quartet gave a concert Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Lustre MB and it was oh so good! Their motto is “Love, Accept, Forgive” and they have traveled 30 years. Three weeks after they sang in Malta’s Milk River Jamboree in July, their bass singer, Bill Rademaker died of a sudden heart attack. They told us of how God provided a new bass singer, Grant, who encouraged us to “keep praying for your prodigals. I was one of them.” Peter Reimer (baritone), Brady Johnson (lead) and his son Brock Johnson (tenor) completed the quartet. Some of the songs were I’m working on a Building, I’ve been touched by a Man from Galilee, We are saved by Jesus, When I lay my Isaac Down, Is That Wedding Music I hear?, King on the Way, Noah, Wish you were Here, and He was So Much Man, He was So Much God and Loving God, Loving Each Other. Their concerts can be seen on YouTube.
The LGS Robotic Lego League is providing an opportunity for a supper of pulled pork, chips and a drink for $8 a plate as a fundraiser to provide their travel costs to be able to compete in events. They will begin at 5:15 pm on Wednesdays, Oct. 30-Dec 11. The meals are available at the LGS lunchroom until Awana starts.
We fully enjoyed seeing the children and students (preschool to grade eight), who came to Awana wearing costumes on Oct 30. Each year they are given opportunity to come dressed up as a Biblical character and the leader, Dawson Olfert, interviewed each age group, giving a prize to one in each age group after the colors were presented and the pledges recited. The small cubbies had a Noah’s ark and a lion, as well as a tiny angel. The (K-grade two) sparks had David, shepherds, and a tiger among red vests uniforms, while the Truth and Training dressed as Ruth, Queen Esther, a panda and angels, The older group declared they were the New Testament early church with a horse. One of my favorites was leader Michael Brown as Obed, carrying baby Jesse. We added Bryanna Allen who portrayed Ruth, who would have been Jesse’s grandma in Bible times and King David’s great-grandmother. We had two who dressed up as David, the shepherd and the warrior. Certainly it added to the enjoyment of the activities.
