Health Officials Recommend Vaccines
The Roosevelt County Health Department provides the following information: Individuals with weakened immune systems and those 65 or older are encouraged to get second COVID vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine for people 65 years and older and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. A second dose of COVID-19 vaccine should be given six months after the first dose and additional doses may be given after consultation with a primary care provider. Currently available data continues to show that COVID-19 vaccination can restore and improve protection against virus variants responsible for most infections and hospitalizations in the United States. COVID-19 vaccination reduces the chance of suffering the effects of Long COVID, which can develop following acute infection and last for an extended amount of time.
Age recommendation for pneumococcal vaccine reduced to 50. The CDC recommends adults get vaccinated against pneumococcal disease at 50 years old, lowering the age from 65 years. Reducing the age of pneumococcal vaccination gives more adults the opportunity to protect themselves at the age when risk of infection increases.
Pneumococcal bacteria can cause serious illnesses including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Older adults are at an increased risk for pneumococcal disease.
