Wolf Point Wrestling Squad Starts Season With New Coach
Wolf Point’s wrestlers are looking forward to a solid season under first-year head coach Maestro Martinez.
“I feel our philosophy has been good,” Martinez said. “We want a strong work ethic and for them not to give up during the year.”
Caleb Pennington is the assistant coach. Junior high coach Dana Matejovsky will also assist as the season progresses.
The Wolves opened practices with 12 athletes.
“I think it should be a good year,” Martinez said. “We’re a very young team for sure.”
Leading the boys’ squad will be Michael Bell and Jesse Reed. Each advanced to the semi-final round and placed fifth at last year’s state meet.
Reed is expected to wrestle at 160 pounds and Bell, a senior, will compete at heavyweight this season.
Kasey Reed will miss the season due to a shoulder injury.
Tavian Bell will begin the season as a manager before returning to action from his leg injury.
Reilly Rees is also a returning letterwinner for the Wolves.
Rebel Mays returns to the wrestling mats after playing basketball the last few winters. “He’s athletic and strong,” Martinez said.
The girls’ squad features six athletes including four sophomores. Returning letterwinners are Jeina Reum and Kai Villaluz.
Reum has just missed placing at state by one match in each of the last two seasons.
“It should be a good year for the high school girls,” Martinez said.
