Poplar Girls Fight Off Lodge Grass, 52-50
Poplar’s girls’ basketball team edged Lodge Grass, 5250, during Class B action in Lockwood on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Poplar opened the fourth period with a 40-35 lead, but Lodge Grass took a 50-49 lead with 1:32 remaining in the non-conference contest.
A pair of free throws by Braelyn Nordwick put Poplar back ahead, 51-50, with 1:04 left.
Poplar increased the margin to 52-50 on a free throw by Cammie Martell with 4.6 seconds left, and Lodge Grass missed a final three-point shot attempt.
A three-point play by Nordwick and a three-pointer by Journey Gourneau helped Poplar take a 19-13 lead in the first quarter.
The scoring of Martell and Nordwick led the way as Poplar increased the margin to 25-13 midway into the second period.
Poplar ended the half with a three-pointer by Mattie Ayers and a free throw by Nordwick for a 29-21 advantage.
Three-pointers by Nordwick and Martell put Poplar up 40-33, but Lodge Grass cut the margin to 40-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Poplar’s boys’ basketball team lost to Lodge Grass by a 71-66 final.
The Indians will play in Harlem on Friday, Dec. 20.
