Senior Profile Wilson Excels In Many Areas For Bainville
One of the few things tougher than catching Elsie Wilson on the track might be slowing the Bainville High School senior down with all her other school activities.
The three-sport standout serves as president of the school’s Business Professionals of America chapter and National Honor Society as well as vice president for Bainville’s FFA chapter. She is also president of the Tumbleweeds’ 4-H club.
The chance of being so active is one of the reasons that Wilson loves being a student in Bainville.
“There are so many opportunities for students to have,” Wilson said while mentioning school trips to Indianapolis and Chicago. “It amazes me that not everybody has that opportunity.”
The importance of being involved is part of the reason that Wilson takes on a leadership role. She wants to make sure younger students also have the same amount of opportunities.
In her 11th year involved in 4-H, Wilson appreciates being able to be involved with a project from start to finish.
She enjoys her time in both FFA and BPA. “Both groups have their benefits,” Wilson explained.
Wilson has been active in FFA since she was in the seventh grade. Achievements have included being on the parliamentary procedure team that qualified for the national convention and placed third at the state meet.
A member of BPA since being a freshman, Wilson has earned national honors in parliamentary procedure and state awards in economic research procedures.
Wilson has been a leader for the Bulldogs in athletics as a force in volleyball, basketball and track. It’s tough for her to decide her favorite sport. “It depends on the day,” she laughs.
When she was a freshman, volleyball wasn’t high on the list. After earning All-State honors and helping the Bulldogs win their first ever divisional trophy, the sport has greatly moved up Wilson’s rankings as far as favorites.
“It really grew on me,” Wilson said of volleyball.
Honors earned in basketball for the senior so far have included All-State as a junior, first team All-Conference as a sophomore and second team All-Conference as a freshman.
She is proud that she and her teammates advanced to the district basketball title game for the first time in 38 years last season and qualified for the divisional tournament for the first time since 2006.
Wilson is thankful that she has been able to celebrate the historical accomplishments with her teammates.
Goals for this basketball season include playing in the district championship game and doing well at the divisional tournament.
As far as track, Wilson holds school records for the 100-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She broke the jumping records as a newcomer to the events as a junior.
Wilson wants to keep improving on her track marks as a senior. “I hope I can improve them some, so it takes a little longer,” Wilson said of future athletes breaking the records.
As far as her path after high school, Wilson is considering different collegiate athletic scholarship offers. Her career plan is to become a physical therapist.
