Landsrud Displays Love Of Music During Break
When Wolf Point High School held its holiday concert in December, a pleasant surprise for audience members was that former Wolf Point High School music standout Rebekah Landsrud served as conductor for one of the numbers.
Landsrud, a junior music education major at the University of Montana, conducted the song All is Calm during the concert. She explained the opportunity arose when Wolf Point High School’s music instructor Jacob Bradshaw emailed her whether she would be in the area during Christmas break.
Landsrud worked with Wolf Point’s music students on the Thursday before the concert and then all day on the Monday of the event.
“I didn’t actually conduct them until seventh period before the concert,” Landsrud said. She feels the experience was a great one for her. “A lot of people don’t get that opportunity when they are in college.”
Although she was nervous, she said working with Wolf Point students made her feel a bit more at ease. “Since I knew most of them, it wasn’t quite as bad,” Landsrud said.
She also enjoyed performing a group song with other alumni and current students as part of the concert.
“It was good to sing with friends from high school again,” she added.
Also during the concert, current high school student Cole Boysun got the chance to conduct a song. Landsrud thought the junior did an excellent job.
“He had a lot more time to prepare the band,” Landsrud said.
Landsrud’s advancements into the musical field doesn’t come as much of a surprise to area residents who watched her develop her skills. She served as a leader for the school’s band and choir programs, including playing solos on her clarinet. She thanked teacher Russell Johnson for being an excellent mentor.
At the University of Montana, she is part of the Grizzly Marching Band and the University Concert Band. Although this is only her second year in Missoula, she is already a junior because of dual credit courses she completed in Wolf Point.
“I feel like it brings people together,” Landsrud said of music. “It creates a community and a family of sort.”
