Lustre Falls Short Against Bainville
Bainville’s girls’ basketball team accounted for a strong defensive performance to defeat Lustre, 45-27, on the road on Saturday, Jan. 4.
The Bulldogs held Lustre scoreless in the second quarter and to three points in the fourth period.
“We had a couple of lazy parts, but our defense played well for the most part,” Bainville Coach Lance Berndt said.
The coach credited Hailey Berwick and Elsie Wilson for doing good jobs of guarding Lustre’s standout Kencia Brown. Addison Hansen had a strong game rebounding for the Bulldogs.
Lustre enjoyed a solid first quarter as the Lions struck for 10 straight points to grab a 12-7 advantage. K. Brown and Lauren Fast each scored four points during the streak while Lauryn Holzrichter added a baseline shot.
Bainville ended the quarter with a free throw by Wilson and a 14-footer by Tally Berwick for a 13-12 lead.
Baskets by Lila Butikofer and Miah Pippenger opened the second quarter for the Bulldogs. A pair of baskets by Wilson and a hoop by Butikofer off a pass from Pippenger put the half-time margin at 23-12.
After the scoring of Wilson led the Bulldogs to a 27-15 advantage, the Lions bounced back with a free throw by K. Brown and a three-pointer by Fast. Lustre pulled to 3324 late in the quarter on a three-pointer by K. Brown, but Hansen hit a baseline shot to put the score at 35-24.
Three-pointers by Wilson and H. Berwick got the Bulldogs off to a good start in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Lustre by a 10-3 margin in the quarter.
Wilson finished the game with 17 points. Also scoring were Hansen with seven, H. Berwick with six, Pippenger with five, T. Berwick with four, Butikofer with four and Chandi Johnson with two points.
Leading Lustre were K. Brown with 13 and Fast with nine points. Also scoring were Sidney Klatt with three and Holzrichter with two points.
The Lions will host Circle on Saturday, Jan. 11, for a league game.
