Chairman Urges Member To Carry IDs
Chairman Justin Gray Hawk Sr. of the Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board urged tribal members to carry a current Fort Peck Tribal ID in a press release on Friday, Jan. 24.
The public service announcement reads, “With all the chaos in America over President Trump’s executive orders and deportation, Fort Peck Tribal members have reached out to me to express their concern of a threat to ‘deport Native Americans along with Mexicans in the hope that nobody can tell the difference.’” Gray Hawk continued, “With that concern in mind, I urge all Fort Peck Tribal members to carry a current Fort Peck Tribal ID.”
If you need a tribal enrollment ID, visit the Fort Peck Tribes’ enrollment department at the administrative building or call 406-768-2311.
The concern regards the Trump administration’s order to suspend birthright citizenship.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, a federal district judge appointed by Ronald Reagan, issued a temporary restraining order to block Trump’s executive order. The judge reportedly called the executive order “blatantly unconstitutional.” The emergency order stopped implementation of the policy for the next 14 days.
According to Fort Belknap Indian Community president Jeffrey Stiffarm, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., told him that there is no such plan in place to target tribes for deportation and that the rumors are unfounded.
