County Commissioners Working For Successful 2025
Roosevelt County commissioners are looking forward to a busy and progressive 2025 for the county.
Economic development efforts will include for the commissioners to continue being proponents of a proposed fertilizer plant near Culbertson. They haven’t heard any updates of the project recently. Cyan H2 currently has its 442-acre site under legal control. Early estimates are that the project will create 3,200 jobs including 2,000 during the construction phase, 200 permanent jobs and 1,000 of in-direct jobs created through economic opportunities.
“I would like to see some businesses come to our area,” Commissioners Robert Toavs said.
Toavs has replaced former county commissioner Gary Macdonald on the Great Northern Development Corp. board. He attended his first meeting during January.
“There are a lot of opportunities from GNDC if someone has a business idea,” Toavs said. “The opportunities are there and the support help is there.”
Commissioners noted that Roosevelt County became the second largest oil producing county in Montana during 2024, behind only Richland County.
Two gravel pits are being created on the county’s eastern end including a frac sand pit.
Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said one of his goals is for the county to obtain the National Guard Armory building in Culbertson.
He added that the county has approved a safety program for the road department. “We’ve hired a safety consultant and she developed a plan,” Oelkers said.
Toavs said another goal is working with the Fort Peck tribes in order to designate more county roads on the reservation.
Commissioners said the tribes have committed $6 million for a lagoon project in Brockton and they hope that the tribes will continue improving that community.
An investment that the county has made is purchasing dash cams for the sheriff’s office. The cameras work in conjunction with the existing body cams.
