Red Hawks Lose Games Against Poplar

Poplar’s girls’ basketball team put together a strong third quarter and held off Froid/Lake, 38-35, during non-conference action on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The Indians held a slim 1814 half-time advantage, but Poplar then struck for the first nine points of the third quarter on a three-pointer by Mattie Ayers, a steal and drive by Bailey Dupree, a fast-break basket by Cammie Martell and an inside shot by Braelyn Nordwick to increase the margin to 27-14.

The Red Hawks battled back later in the quarter as Addison Elvsaas hit a three-pointer and Isabelle Nordwick made a free throw to cut the gap to 29-20.

Poplar held a 31-21 lead at the end of the third quarter. Drives by Ayers and Martell gave the Indians a 35-24 cushion midway into the fourth period.

After Froid/Lake’s Joelle Davidson connected on a three-pointer, Saydee Archambault replied with a three-pointer of her own for a 38-27 margin.

The Red Hawks, however, battled until the end. Mara Salvevold fired in a 17-footer for a 38-29 game with 1:20 remaining.

After a free throw by Elvsaas, I. Nordwick sank two free tosses with 15 seconds left. Davidson, a freshman, then hit another three-pointer to pull the Red Hawks to 38-35 with six seconds remaining. After Poplar missed at the foul stripe, Froid/Lake was unsuccessful on its last trip down the court.

Leading Poplar’s attack were Dupree and Martell with nine points each. B. Nordwick scored eight and Ayers added seven.

Also scoring were Archambault with three and Toni Brown with two.

Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Davidson with 10 and Salvevold with eight points. Also scoring were Brooklyn Nordwick with seven, I. Nordwick with six and Elvsaas with four.

Poplar’s boys’ basketball team accounted for the game’s first 19 points and defeated Froid/Lake by a 61-16 final on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The visiting Indians opened the game with seven straight points by senior Walker Burshia. Dane Moran scored the next five points, including a three-pointer, to increase the margin to 12-0.

Chasen Pribbernow connected on a three-pointer late in the quarter to end the period at 15-0.

Kaniel Ricker struck for four straight points to open the second quarter. The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard when Rylan Young hit a three-pointer with 6:35 left in the half. A 16-footer by Roberto Orozco closed the gap to 19-5.

Poplar tallied the next five points on a free throw by Pribbernow, a basket by Ryder Olson and an inside shot by Keilen Erickson for a 26-5 lead. The Indians held a 28-7 half-time advantage.

Young finished with 11 points for the Red Hawks. Also scoring were Orozco with two, Carson Kelm with two and Teegan Fossum with a point.
