Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball team played close with powerhouse Scobey in the first quarter, but the Spartans captured a 75-30 non-conference victory on Saturday, Feb. 1.

A three-point play by Zandon Calder put the Wolves ahead, 8-7, with 2:49 left in the opening quarter. After Scobey’s Kolten Machart scored off a pass from Evan Tande, Calder hit two free throws for a 10-9 advantage with 2:14 remaining in the period. A basket by Machart put the Spartans up, 11-10, at the end of the quarter.

The Spartans then accounted for 29 of the first 31 points of the second period for a 40-12 lead. The scoring of John Carney and three-point shooting of Cooper Axtman highlighted the outburst.

Two baskets by Cole Holen, including one off an assist from Jett Azure, cut the gap to 40-16. Two free throws by Carney ended the half at 42-16.

Scobey scored the last 13 points of the third quarter for a 68-26 advantage.

Wolf Point’s top scorer were Calder with 12 and Sean Hamilton with nine.

Leading Scobey were Carney with 25, Cam Cromwell with 15 and Axtman with nine points.
