Four Lustre Grade School students, accompanied by Curt and Lisa Neufeld, went to Savage, to compete in the 2025 Mathcounts Chapter Competition. Principal Mrs. Matthyser said upon their return, “What a great day to be a Lion! Out of six teams and 39 students, our four Lions took the top four spots! They Won!”

In the individuals, Harlo Reddig placed first, Justin Schiller placed second, Grace Byers placed third and Samantha Neufeld placed fourth. In the countdown round, Grace Byers won first! Coach Lisa Neufeld told me “I’m so excited for the kids! They did so well!” Mrs. Matthyser commended them with “I am so incredibly proud of this amazing team and their incredible coach! Congratulations!”

There were teams from Glasgow, Fairview, Medicine Lake, Savage, Culbertson and Lustre. They had to be at school at 5:45 a.m., and it was a very snowy day.

Living out in the country gives us perks. After three days of -22 to -35 windchill, the start of the week, and 5 ½ inches new snow on the ground, the skies cleared by 7 p.m. Thursday and we could see Mars above the EMB church, Jupiter hanging below the bright half-moon, and Venus, Neptune and Saturn to the west on Wallstreet Road. Venus was the brightest and peaks its brightness on Feb 16. Uranus was not as bright, but off to the left of Jupiter. “Wow! That’s awesome! God is giving you a beautiful night to catch all that at one time”, texted my sister in law, who grew up where I live. Other alumni from our community have been alerting us to the planetary displays in February, including the “Grand Alignment” due on Feb. 20. Mercury has been seen near the sun this month, with the naked eye as well.

The Lego team traveled to Bozeman to compete at the state competition after placing first and second out of the top ten teams to qualify, in Billings.
