Poplar Girls Down Glasgow In League Contest


Poplar’s girls’ basketball team’s offensive attack was tough to stop in the fourth quarter as the Indians came back for a 54-48 home win over Glasgow on Friday, Feb. 7.
The Indians trailed 42-37 at the end of the third quarter and 46-37 two minutes into the final period when Poplar’s Ashlyn Bull Chief drove in for a basket.
After a free toss by Glasgow’s Joely Chappell at the 5:37 mark, the Indians took charge on three drives by Mattie Ayers and a pair of free throws by Braelyn Nordwick for a 49-47 lead with 3:10 remaining.
The Scotties scored on a free throw by Mayzie Yoakam, but Poplar’s defense remained tough. After a steal by Bailey Dupree, Cammie Martell canned a three-pointer for a 52-48 advantage with 32 seconds left. Glasgow missed from three-point range, and two free throws by Dupree produced a 54-48 lead with 13 seconds remaining.
The Scotties’ final threepoint attempt was blocked by Martell.
Poplar’s top scorers were Nordwick with 16, Ayers with 15 and Dupree with 10 points. Martell finished with nine points. Bull Chief and Toni Brown had two points each.
Yoakam scored 18 points for the Scotties.
Glasgow led 18-17 at the end of the opening quarter and 34-30 at the half.
Nordwick hit a three-pointer to pull Poplar to 36-35 midway into the third quarter, but the Scotties struck for the next six points and went on to take a 42-37 lead at the end of the period.
